Thinking of a website here? Let me answer the questions!

How long will it take my site to download?

This aspect will be considered in the design of any page.

As a rough guide (for a 56 kbps modem: Under two seconds isn't much of a problem. Over five seconds is probably best avoided. Remember that if your visitors have a slower modem they will have to wait longer.

What kind of page can fit into such a limited space? Well just look around! There are pages with plain graphics, animated graphics, single large photographs or a number of small photographs.

What range of systems will be ok for my site?

There is a body called the World Wide Web Consortium which defines standards for web pages. All sites produced for the Electronic Gateway will conform to these standards, using no standard later than HTML 4, which is now very well established.

Web pages which conform to these standards can be read correctly by virtually any browser. Web pages which do not conform, may produces problems when viewed with some browsers.

Some major producers of software market design software which produces code which do not conform to the standards of the World Wide Web Consortium.

You can visit the Consortium's website at www.w3c.org

If I pay for my own domain name, who owns it?

You will!

You won't be stuck with a site well away from the traffic which you can't move anywhere else.

Will I be able to form my own links?

You are positively encouraged to form your own links and everything reasonable will be done to help you do so.

Will I be able to get feedback from visitors?

You will be supplied with statistics regarding the number of visitors to your site.

Will I be able to update my site?

You will be encouraged to keep your site up to date.

All sites can be updated annually at no extra charge.

The cost of other updates will depend on the extent and nature of the updates. Everything will be done to permit you to keep your site up to date as conveniently and cheaply as possible.

Will my site contain other people's advertising?

Only for the Electronic Gateway itself.

A small icon will appear in the upper right hand corner of the screen and an acknowledgement of the web design aspect will appear at the bottom of the page.

No third party advertising will appear without your explicit agreement.

Will you do anything to promote the site?

This will be done in a number of ways:
  • The Electronic Gateway itself will be promoted. Every opportunity will be taken to get visitors to follow their ineterests to relevant sites on the Electronic Gateway.
  • Mutual links will be sought to bring visitor traffic into the Electronic Gateway.
  • A number of Freebies will be placed on the Electronic Gateway. These will be genuine free offers, serving no purpose other than to attract visitors.
  • Submissions will be made, where appropriate, to directories and the success of such activity will be monitored.

What will be done to attract search engines?

By being on the Electronic Gateway you will be placed where you will be found by the Web Crawlers.

Getting attention depends on having a good title, good summary and good list of keywords.

You will be encouraged to play an active part, either by suggesting entries or by suggesting improvements to entries which have been prepared for you.
