On Boxing Day 1999 a low pressure system crossed France and Germany, causing high winds and leaving a trail of destruction.

Swathes of forest were destroyed. "200 year old trees were broken like matchsticks", commented one observer.

The autumn of 2000 was the wettest since records began 250 years ago.

Flooding has occured in some areas on a scale unknown.
