Carreg Coetan



Carreg Coetan There is an abundance of neolithic remains in Wales - such as the burial chambers, or cromlechs - shown here. Although very varied in appearance, many share the characteristic of a large horizontal top (capstone), supported by three or more vertical stones (orthostats).

This superb burial chamber lies just outside the town of Newport. Take the A487 toward Cardigan, then turn immediately left on leaving the town. The monument is clearly marked from the road. It is about half a mile from Newport.

Pentre Ifan



Pentre Ifan Pentre Ifan is probably the most well-known Neolithic Burial Chamber in Wales. The horizontal capstone is about 5 metres long and weighs about 16 tonnes. It is unlikely that it could have been placed in position without the aid of lifting devices of some kind.

Pentre Ifan is located about four miles from Newport. Take the A487 toward Cardigan for about a mile and a half, then it is marked on your right. it is signedposted to follow narrow roads to a lay-by. It is about 200 yards from the road.

Urdd Gobeith Cymru



Urdd Canolfan Prentre Ifan is the most recent residential centre to be opened by the Urdd. Opened in 192 as an education centre the building itself is a 600 year old Tudor gate-house surrounded by natural woodaland and farmland, ensuring a peaceful and homely atmosphere.

The Urdd Gobeith Cymru (national Welsh language youth movement) operate a residential centre aimed particularly at environmental activities.

The directions are the same as for Pentre Ifan burial chamber (above). You pass the centre on the way to the monument.
