Hen Wlad fy Nhadau (the Welsh National Anthem)

The most likely time people outside Wales are likely to hear the Welsh National Anthem is before rugby matches in the Milenium Stadium in Cardiff, when the voices of players and fans echo round the stands.

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion of fri
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwadgarwyr tra mad
Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.
  Gwlad! Gwlad!
  Pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad !
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau
  O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.

The old land of my fathers is dear to me.
Land of poets and singers, men of renown,
Her manly warriers, her great patriots,
Who shed their blood in the cause of freedom.
  Land! Land!
I will be true to my country
While the sea is a wall to the beautiful, pure land
May the old language live on!

The anthem was written in 1856 by Evan James and his son James James. Evan James wrote the words and his son, a harpist, was inspired to write the tune following a walk along the banks of the River Rhondda.
