Merthyr Tydfil developed with the Industrial Revolution and the iron industry.



Cyfarthfa Castle Merthyr Tydfil developed in the Industrial Revolution and the smelting of iron. Cyfarthfa Castle is testimony to the wealth which was generated, but enjoyed by the few.

The stately home is located in a large park with gardens - shown here in the foreground.



Just as in the case of the coal industry it brought about a sharp contrast in the social condition of those who owned the means of production and those who worked to produce.



Iron Workers Cottages The conditions of ironworkers can be visualised from this row of cottages in Merthyr Tydfil. These surviving cottages were unusually large for the time of construction - early 19th Century.

Chapel Row - Number 4 houses a museum to the composer Joseph Parry.
