Wales is .. Castles

Caerphilly Castle Wales boasts an abundance of castles, many in a remarkable state of preservation. The Welsh Historic Monuments organisation (CADW) is responsible for over fifty historical sites which can be visited.

Welsh Castles

These were built by the Welsh to defend themselves from invasion. After the Norman invasion, these were largely destroyed.

Norman Castles

Built by the Normans after successfully conquering Wales in the 11th to 13th centuries. Intended to maintain the subjugation of the Welsh, some were briefly captured during uprisings such as that led by Owain Glyndwr in the period 1400 to 1406.

Prestigious Homes

Welsh castles were last used for military defence during the Civil War (1642-1649). After that building was for prestige rather than defence.
