Sensible Local Transport
Paper circulated at the Sustainable Wales Conference in Bulith Wells on 18/11/00.

It describes the waste, unnecessary pollution and maintenance of a cycle of deprivation caused by present transport practices, pointing particularly to experiences in the Rhondda.

Suggestions for improvement in the form of collective taxis and lift sharing are briefly described. These form the main recommendations of the response to the RCT draft transport plan below.

RCT's Draft Local Transport Plan and Responses
In 2000 the Rhondda Cynon Taff Council (which covers the town of Pontypridd and the valleys to the north of the town) published a Draft Transport Plan which offered little new thinking to deal with the increased volumes of traffic, the decline of bus services and the transport problems of the economically weak. Two submissions arguing for better alternatives are included.

FOE Cymru Press Releases
FOE Cymru expose the weaknesses of the hauliers' case arguing that it is overcapacity in the industry rather than the high price of petrol which is causing hardship.
