Free Wales

Notes and coins with black cross There's a lot you can do in Wales without having to part with this stuff.

Many community organisations arrange activities which offer entertainment educational opportunities - all for very little money and often free.

Access to many of Wales' historic sites, including those managed by CADW (see Events - Organisations and other Details ) can be visited without payment

Devolution hasn't altered the state of the currency. The bits of paper with the Queen's head are still the only legal tender in Wales. The coins will probably have been made in Llantrisant in South Wales.

Free Museums and Art Galleries

From April 2001 no admission fee will be charged to the National Museums and Art Galleries of Wales:

  • National Museum and Art Gallery, Cardiff
  • The Museum of Welsh Life, St. Fagans
  • Welsh Slate Museum, Llanberis
  • The Museum of the Welsh Wollen Industry, Dre-fach Felindre
  • Segontium Roman Fort Museum, Caernarfon
  • Big Pit: Mining Museum of Wales
  • Roman Legionary Museum, Caerleon
  • Turner House Gallery, Penarth

Pentre Ifan The Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber (see Ancient Monuments in Wales ) is one of a number of historical sites maintained by CADW (the national organisation commissioned to preserve and promote historic monuments) yet access by the public is without charge.

Elsewhere something like this would probably be commercialised and used as a lure to make money from tourists. In Wales it is maintained as a matter of public service.

Other things - many guided walks for instance - are maintained thorugh the support of volunteer enthusiasts, who are very willing to share their knowledge and experience with others.

Sometimes the best things in life are free!
