Pontypridd and Valleys

A N S W E R S
Mystery Tour of the Area

If you live in the area, see if you can identify the following things:

  1. Where can you find a working portcullis?
In Castell Coch. Castell Coch is a "folly" - the name given to something built comparatively modern times, but made to look ancient.

  2. Where can you find a bridge with six holes in it?
In Pontypridd, just beside the road bridge over the Taff. At the time it was built it was the longest single span bridge in the world. The holes are necessary to stop the bridge from collapsing under its own weight. This is what happened to earlier attempts to build the bridge. Incidently the bridge gives the town its name: pont=bridge, pridd=earth,

  3. Where can you find a statue of a man with a fox's head on top of his own?
In front of the Model House in Llantrisant. The man is Dr. William Price, a man of many bizarre ideas, including cremating dead bodies, something which is fully accepted today - see Famous Figures in Welsh History .

  4. Where can you see a demonstration of just how narrow some coal seams were?
In the pedestrian area of Tonypandy. The monument has a layer of black, the thickness of the narrowest seams that were mined. It is difficult to imagine the working conditions where men picked coal in such a confined space.

  5. Where can you see a set of stocks?
By Llantrisant Castle - not originals, but modern reconstructions.

  6. Where is the longest railway platform in Europe?
    Pontypridd station.

If you don't live in the area, why not put these things on a list of things to see if you come to visit?
