Although few people knew it at the time the Miners' Strike of 1984-85
represented the last gasp for the South Wales coal industry. With
the resistance neutralised, the Conservative Government embarked on a
programme of pit closures.
Within a decade there were none left, apart from the Tower Colliery in Hirwaun, which survived as a workers' cooperative. A minor industry has taken its place - that of building memorials to the industrial past. Shown here is the statue of a miner and his wife, erected in Llwynypia in 1993. The man is carrying a typical miners' lamp. His wife is carrying her baby in typical Welsh fashion - wrapped in a shawl. |
