Located just off the A482 near Pumpsaint, between Lampeter and Llandovery,
the Dolaucothi Gold Mines, operated by the National Trust, offer a unique
view of mining at different periods of Welsh History.
The Romans were attracted to Dolaucothi by the presence of gold. The
Victorians saw the potential for reworking the site and laid several
underground shafts and adits (horizontal shafts). Mineworking was
abandoned at the site just before the beginning of the Second World War.
The site consists of the grounds, with a number of sheds with exhibitions
of equipment. There are two tours - one covering the Roman workings
(mainly above ground) and the other the Victorian workings (mainly
underground).
There are separate admission charges to the site and to each of the
workings.
