Valleys Roots Series
Valleys Roots is a joint promotion between Blackwood Miners Institute,
Pontardawe Arts Centre, The Borough Theatre Abergavenny, Theatr Bryceiniog
and The Beaufort Theatre and Ballroom. Between them, these venues are
committed to bringing the very best in folk/roots and world music to the
valleys of South Wales.
Arts Development
Caerphilly County Borough's Arts Development team are based at the
'Stute and work throughout the County Borough, encouraging participation

Background
The Caerpyilly Mountain Countryside Service was set up in 1979 to work to
protect the countryside to the north of Cardiff. Itis funded and run by a
partership of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cardiff County Council and
Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council.
The Countryside service aims to:
enhance peoples enjoyment of the countryside and to increase leiusure
opportunities by improving and waymarking footpaths and bridelways, providing
a guided walks programme, and an information and interpretation service.
improve the quality of the landscape in the countryside by carrying out
work such as repairing dry stone walls, woodland management and pond restoration
provide a conservation and education service to youth, school and community
groups
The Countryside Service works with volunteers, community groups, colleges and
schools to achieve these aims. If youare interested in working with us to

Can I manage that walk?
To give you a better idea of the effort needed to complete the walk
the number shown after the title means the following:
1b - easy (no experience needed)
2b - moderate
3b - some effort needed
4b - strenuous
5b - very strenuous (experienced walkers only)
What to bring?
Wear walking boots or shoes and bring waterproofs. On day long walks carry
your food, drink and waterproofs in a small rucksack.
Holiday Hotspots
Throughout the schoold summer holidays we are running activity days for
families. Just turn up at the meeting place either in the morning or
afternoon. You can stay all day but the morning's activity is repeated in
the afternoon. Please remember all children must be accompanied by an adult.

What you need to know
Walking is the best way to explore your local countryside. Join us on one of
the walks and you will discover beautiful scenery in areas steeped in history.
Many of the walks give you the chance to learn more about the countryside.
Our family fun events will certainly brighten up your day! The walks are
designed to appeal to everyone and include short rambles and all day hikes.
The Leaders
The walks are chosen and led by experienced local walkers. We also use
experts to lead wals as well as Countryside Service staff. Someone will
always be there to meet you at the start. We do, however, reserve the
right to cancel the walk or alter the route in foul weather.
Getting to the Start
Many of the walks start near to public transport facilities, so if you don't
drive and you don't live near the start, you can still join our walks.
Please check local timetables for details.
If you are driving please try to share your car with other walkers and please
don't leave anything valuable in your car.

Garwnant is situated just off the A470, 5 miles north of Merthyr Tydfil. It
is well signposted from the A470.
Public transport to Garwnant is provided by Stagecoach: 01633 266 366.
Buses run from Merthyr or Brecon eight times a day each,
Monday to Saturday and twice each on Sundays. Ask the bus driver to stop
at Garwnant.
Access for all. Garwnant has a disabled access track and disabled toilets
on site. If you have any further enquiries please contact us.
Rangers / Centre staff retain the right to call of the event if the weather
is inclement, and to refuse participation of any people not properly equipped.
Cadw is the Government Agency which looks after the built heritage of Wales.
It's mission is to protect, conserve and promote the appreciation of the
built heritage of wales, on behalf of the National Assembly for Wales.
Cadw's events programme serves to inform, educate and entertain, and brings
the built heritage to life.
The Brecon Beacons National Park has some of the finest landscape in Wales.
Its 519 square miles were designated a National Prk in 1957. These walks
and activities have been designed to help you discover thiw wonderful
countryside
around you. On Summer Sundays and Bank Holidays from May 28 until
September 3 there is a comprehensive network of special Beacons Bus services
which will h elp you access many pats of the park from many areas of South
Wales.
Classification of walks:
Easy - taking it at an easy pace, suitable for new walkers.
Moderate - some ascent involved, steady pace.
Energetic - some steep ascents, good for improving fitness.
Strenuous - several steep ascents, good level of fitness required.
