The way we act as consumers can have important consequences both
for ourselves and our communities.
As consumers we should expect a high standard of goods and services, without
being unreasonable in our demands or unrealistic in our expectations.
We should be aware that competition is our main protection from being
overcharged. Particularly when we spend large amounts of money we should
be prepared to research the market and not be pressured into making
on-the-spot decisions.
Low prices are not always good news. It could be:
The goods are poor quality or imitations of a better product
Powerful businesses may be lowering their prices in order to force competitors
out of business (after which the prices will go up again).
Things have been made through exploiting the workers. For example,
child labour is common in some countries.
