Bridgend Chamber of Trade found things tough going when it came to getting
contributions to the town's Christmas Festival.
They asked each shop to contribute just £10, but only a minority responded.
The response was poorest in chain stores, with managers saying they had to
contact head office, even for such a small sum of money.
The president of the Chamber of Trade commented that many of the chain
store manages lived outside Bridgend and appeared to take little interest
in the town's future.
